Welcome to Bare Theatre, a theatre company based in Raleigh, North Carolina.
"One of our favorite minimal companies" -- Byron Woods, Independent Weekly [King Lear] And intense it was: The cruelty, greed and betrayal afoot in the kingdom of a disconnected, aging ruler quickly leads to greater tragedy than the characters (scheming or innocent) could have predicted. The audience queasily watched the gore and treachery unfold... -- Sarah Lupton, Independent Weekly [King Lear] whose goriest moments rival those of Titus Andronicus. -- Robert McDowell, Triangle Theatre Review [A Midsummer Night's Dream] a show that will surely make some local critic’s 10 best list for 2006. -- Robert McDowell, Classical Voice of North Carolina [Titus Andronicus] was ghastly, ghoulish, and great fun for those with stomachs stout enough to tolerate the succession of brutal murders and a rape, with arms and legs lopped off, tongues ripped out, etc. Whether working with youthful or adult performers, Carmen-maria Mandley is one of the Triangle's most imaginative and resourceful directors. -- Robert McDowell, Classical Voice of North Carolina It's been years since Bare Theatre first exposed itself to Triangle audiences, with a fabulous production of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing in a former tire factory in downtown Raleigh. Well, cover your eyes, because they're back..... It takes mere moments for the suspense-o-meter in Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus to hit its first peak. And the actors hit it emphatically. -- Orla Swift, Raleigh News and Observer Her company's 2001 renditions of Coriolanus and Much Ado About Nothing reintroduced clarity and precision to a playwright more frequently burlesqued than interpreted at the time. If anything, Mandley's flair for distinctive stage imagery has intensified. From the eerie initial moments when the ensemble breathes in unison, in darkness, we're taken by scenes that seem as painted or choreographed as much as they are directed. -- Byron Woods, Independent Weekly
Bare is a group of artists dedicated to simple, eclectic, non-traditional and spontaneous theatre. We hope to give our audience a clear, articulate and passionate experience of theatre with little other than a room, audience, the actors, and the text. Come join us
